In order to carry a positive action we must develop here a positive vision.

Now is the time when your action is practice.

Compassion and love give meaning to our activities and makes them constructive.

We cannot overcome anger and hatred simply by suppressing them. We need to actively cultivate the antidotes: patience and tolerance.

If we can refrain from harming others in our actions & words we can start to give serious attention to actively doing good.

Real power has to do with one's ability to influence the hearts and minds of others.

Always engage yourself positively with situations.

Love is the absence of judgment.

If scientific analysis were conclusively to demonstrate certain claims in Buddhism to be false then we must accept the findings of science and abandon those claims.

I am increasingly convinced that the time has come to find a way of thinking about spirituality and ethics beyond religion altogether.

Altruism is the best source of happiness. There is no doubt about that.

The root of happiness is altruism - the wish to be of service to others.

Infinite altruism is the basis of peace and happiness. If you want altruism you must control hate and you must practice patience. The main teachers of patience are our enemies.

Real love is not based on attachment but on altruism. In this case your compassion will remain as a humane response to suffering as long as beings continue to suffer.

True happiness comes from having a sense of inner peace and contentment which in turn must be achieved by cultivating altruism love and compassion and by eliminating anger selfishness and greed.

I always believe the rule by king or official leader is outdated. Now we must catch up with the modern world.

I am just one human being.

Old friends pass away new friends appear. It is just like the days. An old day passes a new day arrives. The important thing is to make it meaningful: a meaningful friend - or a meaningful day.

It is important to pray for peace. . . But you must also take actions to make that happen. Every single day.

The only "definitive truth" for Buddhism is the absolute negation of any one truth as the Definitive Truth.

The best way to resolve any problem in the human world is for all sides to sit down and talk.

May I examine my mind in all actions and as soon as a negative state occurs since it endangers myself and others may I firmly face and avert it.

I don't want to convert people to Buddhism â?? all major religions when understood properly have the same potential for good.

All religions are essentially the same in their goal of developing a good human heart so that we may become better human beings.

All religions try to benefit people with the same basic message of the need for love and compassion for justice and honesty for contentment.

Forming a new world religion is difficult and not particularly desirable. However in that love is essential to all religions one could speak of the universal religion of love.

I believe all religions pursue the same goals that of cultivating human goodness and bringing happiness to all human beings. Though the means may appear different the ends are the same.

The essence of all religions is love compassion and tolerance. Kindness is my true religion. The clear proof of a person's love of God is if that person genuinely shows love to fellow human beings.

We may be different races and religions but we are all part of the same human family

Despite all philosophical differences all major world religions have the same potential to create good human beings.

Ultimately the reason why love and compassion bring the greatest happiness is simply that our nature cherishes them above all else. The need for love lies at the very foundation of human existence.

The Dalai Lama should not be partisan either should remain above.

The essence of compassion is a desire to alleviate the suffering of others and to promote their well-being

As you breathe in cherish yourself. As you breathe out cherish all Beings.

I am simply just one monk. That's all.

Buddhahood is a state free of all obstructions to knowledge and disturbing emotions. It is the state in which the mind is fully evolved.

So the smart brain must be balanced with a warm heart a good heart -a sense of responsibility of concern for the well-being of others.

What I believe according to my own experience is that a calm peaceful mind is a very important element for sustaining the body in a balanced way.

Death means change our clothes. Clothes become old then time to come change. So this body become old and then time come take young body.

A Compassionate state of mind brings inner peace and therefore a healthier body.

When our mind is calm weâ??re better able to find peace of mind and live a joyful life.

If you make your best effort to be kinder nurture compassion make the world a better place then you can say 'At least I've done my best.

It is maybe not the best choice to have a favorite anything.

In the practice of tolerance one's enemy is the best teacher.

Anger may bring extra energy but it eclipses the best part of our brain: its rationality. The energy of anger is almost always unreliable.

If the mind is dominated by hatred the best part of the brain which is used to judge right and wrong does not function properly.

Meet hostility and suspicion with kindness. Helping others out of love is always the best option.

Universal responsibility is the key to human survival. It is the best foundation for world peace.

There is often a big disparity between the way in which we perceive things and the way things really are.

If I am only happy for myself many fewer chances for happiness. If I am happy when good things happen to other people billions more chances to be happy!

There are five billion human beings and in a certain way I think we need five billion different religions.

Out of 6 billion humans the troublemakers are just a handful.

The purpose of all the major religious traditions is not to construct big temples on the outside but to create temples of goodness and compassion inside in our hearts.

You are the people who are shaping a better world. One of the secrets of inner peace is the practice of compassion.

We have made a great effort to maintain all levels of Buddhist education; it has helped us have a kind of renaissance really.

Encountering sufferings will definitely contribute to the elevation of your spiritual practice provided you are able to transform calamity and misfortune into the path.

Today due to the massive Chinese population transfer the nation of Tibet truly faces the threat of extinction along with its unique cultural heritage of Buddhist spirituality.

Since we became Buddhist we have lived in peace with them. We did not invade them. We did not want them to invade us. We have never declared war on China.

If we had to accept the idea of an independent creator the explanations given in [several Buddhist texts] which completely refutes the existence per se of all phenomena would be negated.

Firstly as a Buddhist monk I hold that violence is not good. Secondly I am a firm believer in the Gandian ethic of passive resistance. And thirdly in reality violence is not our strength.

We believe in self creation. That's why Buddhists believe in the Four Noble Truths.

In Buddhism ignorance as the root cause of suffering refers to a fundamental misperception of the true nature of the self and all phenomena.

If there's good strong evidence from science that such and such is the case and this is contrary to Buddhism then we will change.

We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.

Compassion is not religious business it is human business it is not luxury it is essential for our own peace and mental stability it is essential for human survival.

I am a simple Buddhist monk - no more no less.

Love and compassion are necessities not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.

I describe myself as a simple Buddhist monk. No more no less.

Through violence you may 'solve' one problem but you sow the seeds for another.

To combat hatred directed toward a person a Buddhist cultivates loving kindness toward that person.

Don't become a Buddhist. The world doesn't need Buddhist. Do practice Compassion. The world needs more compassion.

Sometimes one creates a dynamic impression by saying something and sometimes one creates as significant an impression by remaining silent.

The Buddha gave equal opportunities to women. But we even as followers of Buddha neglected that.

Open-minded people tend to be interested in Buddhism because Buddha urged people to investigate things - he didn't just command them to believe.

Reality is devoid of any intrinsic identity that can be captured by any one single proposition - that is what Buddha meant by "voidness.

Buddha was speaking about reality. Reality may be one in its deepest essence but Buddha also stated that all propositions about reality are only contingent.

Some consider me as a living Buddha. That's nonsense. That's silly. That's wrong. If they consider me a simple Buddhist monk however that's probably okay.

In the Buddha's life story we see the three stages of practice: Morality comes first then concentrated meditation and then wisdom. And we see that the path takes time.

The foundation of the Buddha's teachings lies in compassion and the reason for practicing the teachings is to wipe out the persistence of ego the number-one enemy of compassion.

I am not promoting Buddhism. I am promoting human values.

If science proves some belief of Buddhism wrong then Buddhism will have to change.

As far as ignorance is concerned not just Buddhism every religion recognizes it as the source of suffering.

I could justify violence only in this extreme case to save the last living knowledge of Buddhism itself.

The essence of Buddhism is if you can help others. If not then at least refrain from hurting others.

As human beings we have the same experience of destructive and constructive emotions. We also have a human mind capable of developing wisdom. We all have the same Buddha nature.

Buddha urged people to investigate things - he didn't just command them to believe.

Harmony can not thrive in a climate of mistrust cheating bullying; mean-spirited competition.

Once you have a genuine sense of concern for others thereâ??s no room for cheating bullying or exploitation.

We need to make material progress but we need inner development too ... remember that the real development we seek is not in the buildings but in our hearts and minds.

If you concern yourself mainly with others the broader your thinking becomes and lifeâ??s inevitable difficulties disturb you less.

When I meet people from other cultures I know that they too want happiness and do not want suffering this allows me to see them as brothers and sisters.

Because we all share an identical need for love it is possible to feel that anybody we meet in whatever circumstances is a brother or sister.

I consider others as just brothers and sisters. Nothing barrier.

Genuine harmony must come from the heart. It cannot come from the barrel of a gun.

When you engage in fulfilling the needs of others your own needs are fulfilled as a by-product.

Media people should have long noses like an elephant to smell out politicians mayors prime ministers and businessmen. We need to know the reality the good and the bad not just the appearance.

In the modern world the interests of a particular community can no longer be considered to lie within the confines of its own boundaries.

If we looked down at the world from space we would not see any demarcations of national boundaries. We would simply see one small planet just one.

Without mutual tolerance emerging as the foundation terrible situations like those of Tibet and Sri Lanka Bosnia and Rwanda can never be effectively improved.

Calm mind brings inner strength and self-confidence so that's very important for good health.

Spend 5 minutes breathing in cherishing yourself; and breathing out cherishing others. If you think about people you have difficulty cherishing extend your cherishing to them anyway.

Time passes unhindered. When we make mistakes we cannot turn the clock back and try again. All we can do is use the present well.

I find hope in the darkest of days and focus in the brightest. I do not judge the universe.

It is vital that when educating our children's brains that we do not neglect to educate their hearts.

Our own brain our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.

Your education tends to develop the brain while it neglects the heart so you have a longing for teachings that develop and strengthen the good heart.

My Brain and My Heart are my Temples. My true Religion is Kindness.

There is no need for temples no need for complicated philosophies. My brain and my heart are my temples; my philosophy is kindness.

I believe that whether a person follows any religion or not is unimportant he or she must have a good heart a warm heart.

I want to be just a pure spiritual leader.

The Dalai Lama is just a temporal leader of Tibet.

The basic condition of human life is happiness.

If we make consistent effort based on proper education we can change the world.

Genuine peace is based on inner peace because you cannot build peace on the basis of anger

I believe that we are fundamentally the same and have the same basic potential.

Give the ones you love wings to fly roots to come back and reasons to stay.

I believe in justice and truth without which there would be no basis for human hope

On a daily basis you must take more care of your mind than just money money money!

Great changes start with individuals; the basis of world peace is inner peace in the hearts of individuals.

A mind wishing to benefit other people and other sentient beings is the very basis of peace and happiness.

I became the Dalai Lama not on a volunteer basis.

I truly believe that compassion provides the basis of human survival.

Basically from the viewpoint of real human value we are all the same.

All major religious traditions carry basically the same message that is love compassion and forgiveness the important thing is they should be part of our daily lives.

It is our basic right to be a happy person happy family and eventually a happy world. That should be our goal.

If I say "I am a monk." or "I am a Buddhist " these are in comparison to my nature as a human being temporary. To be human is basic.

Happiness is determined more by one's state of mind than by external events.

Different religions meet the needs of different people

I only escaped from Tibet because I feared my people would resort to desperate violence if the Chinese took me as their prisoner.

Reason well from the beginning and then there will never be any need to look back with confusion and doubt.

It's best not to get too excited or too depressed by the ups and downs of life.

Limitless like the ocean are your excellent qualities.

Love is wanting others to be happy.

The purpose of life is to be happy.

The purpose of our lives is to be happy.

If you want others to be happy practice compassion. If you want to be happy practice compassion.

Our business is to be happy.

I am confident I will set foot again in Tibet in my lifetime.

I am confident that the next century will be better than this one.

Live a good honourable life. Then when you get older and look back you'll be able to enjoy it a second time.

I'm nothing special just an ordinary human being. That's why I always describe myself as a simple Buddhist monk.

More compassionate mind more sense of concern for other's well-being is source of happiness.

Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.

What unites all beings is their desire for happiness.

All sentient beings have the seed of the Buddha within them.

Peace does not come through prayer we human beings must create peace.

Warm-heartedne ss and concern for othersâ?? well-being are a condition for happiness whether you are religious or not.

True enlightenment is nothing but the nature of one's own self being fully realized.

When you practice gratefulness there is a sense of respect toward others.

A simple smile. That's the start of opening your heart and being compassionate to others.

The more we are concerned for the well being of others the closer we will feel to each other.

The more we care for the happiness of others the greater is our own sense of well-being.

If we try to secure the well-being of others we will at the same time create the conditions for our own.

Basically therefore we should approach others openly recognizing each person as another human being just like ourselves. There is not much difference between us all.

Without the human community one single human being cannot survive.

Ultimately the human being is in the mercy of nature.

I always have the feeling that I'm just another human being.

Our purpose in life is to be happy. From the very core of our being we simply desire contentment.

A sense of contentment is crucial to being happy. Physical health material wealth and friends contribute to this but contentment governs our relations with them all.

The feeling of being happy or unhappy rarely depends on our absolute state but on our perception of the situation on our capacity to be satisfied with what we have.

Even without a religion we can become a good human being.

We can benefit others through our actions by being warm and generous toward them by being charitable and by helping those in need.

Of course when I say that human nature is gentleness it is not 100 percent so. Every human being has that nature but there are many people acting against their nature being false.

World belongs to humanity not this leader that leader or that king or prince or religious leader. World belongs to humanity.

Whether or not we follow any particular spiritual tradition the benefits of love and kindness are obvious to anyone.

A positive state of mind is not merely good for you it benefits everyone with whom you come into contact literally changing the world.

When something needs to be done in the world to rectify the wrongs if one is really concerned with benefiting others one needs to be engaged involved. This is action out of compassion.

When we are motivated by compassion and wisdom the results of our actions benefit everyone not just our individual selves.

Love is a simple practice yet it is very beneficial for the individual who practices it as well as for the community in which he lives for the nation and for the whole world

What is the purpose of life? I believe that the purpose of life is to be happy.

I believe that constant effort tireless effort pursuing clear goals with sincere effort is the only way

My earnest request is that you practice love and kindness whether you believe in a religion or not

Love and Compassion are the true religions to me. But to develop this we do not need to believe in any religion.

Today is the right day to love believe do and mostly live.

If some people have the belief or view that the Dalai Lama has some miracle power that's totally nonsense. I am just one human being.

I believe deeply that we must find all of us together a new spirituality.

I am a firm believer in the importance of democracy not only as the ultimate goal but also as an essential part of the process.

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.

If some people have the belief or view that the Dalai Lama has some miracle power that's totally nonsense.

The creatures that inhabit this earth--be they human beings or animals--are here to contribute each in its own particular way to the beauty and prosperity of the world.

Pain can change you but that doesn't mean it has to be a bad change. Take that pain and turn it into wisdom.

It may seem unrealistic to think we can ever become free from hatred but Buddhists have systematic methods for gradually developing a tolerance powerful enough to give such freedom.

Don't use Buddhism to become a Buddhist. Use Buddhism to become better at whatever else in your life you are doing already.

Better grounded emotionally through patience we become stronger mentally and spiritually and tend to be healthier physically.

No material object however beautiful or valuable can make us feel loved because our deeper identity and true character lie in the subjective nature of the mind.

I think that ethical behaviour is another feature of the kind of inner discipline that leads to a happier existence.

So the first step in seeking happiness is learning. We first have to learn how negative emotions and behaviors are harmful to us and how positive emotions are helpful.

Do not let the behavior of others destroy your inner peace.

We can hardly call a beggar an obstacle to generosity.

To me there is no difference whether president beggar or king.

World peace begins with inner peace.

Since at the beginning and end of our lives we are so dependent on other's kindness how can it be in ......the middle that we would neglect kindness towards others?

Wealth is not necessarily a bad thing when it has been earned in an honest manner and neither other individuals nor the environment suffered for it.

When selflessness is seen in objects the seed of cyclic existence is destroyed.

When we feel love and kindness toward others it not only makes others feel loved and cared for but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace.

We are working as hard as we can; we are preparing ourselves as carefully as we can; we fully intend to make our contribution to the world in the coming century.

If I had remained in Lhasa even without the Chinese occupation I would probably have carried the ceremonial role in some orthodox way.

I do not want to carry any public position.

I really do not want to carry some kind of party function.

In most cases my visits to the West are for promotion of human values and religious harmony.

I feel they should be discussed informally truthfully honestly and in some cases I think without forgetting ... long-term vision. They should be practical.

I believe all suffering is caused by ignorance.

All suffering is caused by ignorance. People inflict pain on others in the selfish pursuit of their own happiness or satisfaction

If you want change create the causes.

Action for Happiness encourages each of us to live more compassionately and put the happiness of others at the centre of our lives. This is the path to lasting peace and happiness

I think there's every reason this 21st century will be much happier.

From a certain point of view our real enemy the true troublemaker is inside.

If a person's basic state of mind is serene and calm then it is possible for this inner peace to overwhelm a painful physical experience.

Compassion tolerance forgiveness and a sense of self-discipline are qualities that help us lead our daily lives with a calm mind

Through training there is knowledge. You can produce compassion love forgiveness. you can change yourself.

Conversion is not my intention. Changing religion is not easy. You may develop some kind of confusion or difficulties.

For change to happen in any community the initiative must come from the individual.

First one must change. I first watch myself check myself then expect changes from others.

Compassion instills a sense of calm inner strength and a deep confidence and satisfaction

The world will be changed by western women.

Real change in society must start from individual initiative.

A mind that is characterized by unrest will not be tranquil even in the presence of great calm.

A calm mind is good for our physical health but it also enables us to see things more realistically.

Developing concern for others thinking of them as part of us brings self-confidence reduces our sense of suspicion and mistrust and enables us to develop a calm mind.

The more you nurture a feeling of loving kindness the happier and calmer you will be.

Without changing one's self without peace in one's self world peace is not possible.

Chinese people themselves they really want change.

I always say that people should not rush to change religions. There is real value in finding the spiritual resources you need in your home religion.

I always tell my Western friends that it is best to keep your own tradition. Changing religion is not easy and sometimes causes confusion. You must value your tradition and honor your own religion.

We must not lose our trust in the power of truth. Everything is always changing in the world.

The greater the level of calmness of our mind the greater our peace of mind the greater our ability to enjoy a happy and joyful life.

Don't ever mistake my silence for ignorance my calmness for acceptance or my kindness for weakness. Compassion and tolerance are not a sign of weakness but a sign of strength.

If your life becomes only a medium of production then many of the good human values and characteristics will be lost.

Today more than ever before life must be characterized by a sense of Universal responsibility not only nation to nation and human to human but also human to other forms of life.

In order to lead a meaningful life you need to cherish others pay attention to human values and try to cultivate inner peace.

If you focus only on yourself and neglect others you will lose; but you will gain if you value others as much as you cherish yourself.

I pray for a more friendly more caring and more understanding human family on this planet. To all who dislike suffering who cherish lasting happiness this is my heartfelt appeal.

During the day extend that attitude to everyone you meet. Practice cherishing the "simplest" person (clerks attendants etc) or people you dislike.

Children are our greatest untapped resource.

I think really China Chinese I think they really have a long history of civilization rich culture.

Had Tibet not fallen away from dharma China could not have invaded.

We have never declared war on China. We have only asked them to leave us in peace to let us have our natural freedom.

My aim is to create a happy society with genuine friendship. Friendship between Tibetan and Chinese peoples is very essential.

I must have dialogue with the Chinese government and dialogue requires compromise. Therefore I'm speaking for genuine self-rule not for independence.

Self-rule means that China must stop its intensive effort to colonize Tibet with Chinese settlers and must allow Tibetans to hold responsible positions in the government of Tibet.

Under no circumstances should you lose hope.

We can wake ourselves up discover in ourselves an energy that was hidden there and act with more clarity more force.

There is nothing I can't live without. I learned this attitude when I was a child.

People need to climb the mountain not simple because it is there But because the soulful divinity needs to be mated with the spirit.

I think governments can't do much.

True friends share genuine closeness and remain friends irrespective of fluctuating fortunes.

As human beings we are only able to survive in dependence upon the co-operation help and kindness of other fellow humans.

All good qualities must be sown and cultivated. We canâ??t expect to change overnight from an ordinary person into one with high realizations.

It is our collective and individual responsibility to preserve and tend to the environment in which we all live.

Whether we are rich or poor educated or uneducated whatever our nationality colour social status or ideology may be the purpose of our lives is to be happy

It is not enough to belong to a religion. You also have to put it into practice. Religion is like medicine. You have to ingest it to combat the illness.

I always tell people that religious institutions and political institutions should be separate. So while I'm telling people this I myself continue with them combined. Hypocrisy!

Today different ethnic groups and different nations come together due to common sense.

Logically harmony must come from the heart... Harmony very much based on trust. As soon as use force creates fear. Fear and trust cannot go together.

Unlike an external enemy the inner enemy cannot regroup and launch a comeback once it has been destroyed from within.

The main cause of suffering is egoistic desire for one's own comfort and happiness.

Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them at least don't hurt them.

Humans are not machines-we are something more. We have feeling and experience. Material comforts are not sufficient to satisfy us. We need something deeper-human affection.

True compassion is not just an emotional response but a firm commitment founded on reason.

The most important thing is to have a sense of responsibility commitment and concern for each of our fellow human beings.

A mind committed to compassion is like an overflowing reservoir - a constant source of energy determination and kindness.

Always embrace the common humanity that lies at the heart of us all.

There must be a way of promoting human values without involving religion based on common sense experience and recent scientific findings.
