Timothy Keller Quotes

God relentlessly offers his grace to people who do not deserve it or seek it or even appreciate it after they have been saved by it.

Secularism and Religion are both all about your personal performance. The Gospel is the performance of another applied to you.

Power approval comfort and control are meta-idols that hold sway over our daily lives.

When people say "I know God forgives me but I can't forgive myself " they mean that they have failed an idol whose approval is more important than God's.

Most apologetic books are really written for Christians even the ones that purport to be written for non-believers.

In cities you have more image of God per square inch than anywhere else on Earth.

Faith is not opposed to reason but it is sometimes opposed to feelings and appearances.

It is remarkable that in all of his writings Paul's prayers for his friends contain no appeals for changes in their circumstances.

Our prayers should arise out of immersion in the Scripture. [We] speak only to the degree we are spoken to.

When Jesus got the big questions he didn't present arguments. He presented himself.

Change happens not just by giving the mind new arguments but also by feeding the imagination new beauties

In the end we love people into belief. We do not argue them into belief.

A god of less wrath than the God of the Bible is necessarily a god of less love. His anger is a product of his love.

I hate the moment when suddenly my anger turns into tears

Forgiveness always comes at a cost to the one granting the forgiveness. To not retaliate is to absorb the cost.

When you forgive that means you absorb the loss and the debt. You bear it yourself. All forgiveness then is costly.

The essence of forgiveness is absorbing pain instead of giving it.

We get angry when we feel like God owes us a better life than we have.

Prayer gives us relief from the melancholy burden of self-absorption .

There's nothing that makes you more miserable (or less interesting) than self-absorption .

If anything becomes more fundamental than God to your happiness meaning of life and identity then it is an idol.

It takes pride to be anxious â?? I am not wise enough to know how my life should go.

God looks at the anxious and says I tore my Son to shreds for you and you're afraid I will not give you what you need?

Prayer is never just an emergency flare or desperate anxious gamble. God's attention is not based on our performance but parental love.

The doctrine of grace and redemption keeps us from seeing any person or situation as hopeless.

Anything can serve as a counterfeit god especially the very best things in life.

[Spiritual friendship] is eagerly helping one another know serve love and resemble God in deeper and deeper ways.

Friendship is a deep oneness that develops when two people speaking the truth in love to one another journey together to the same horizon.

Every other religion points to answers. Jesus though says 'I am the answer'.

Jesus didn't come to tell us the answers to the questions of life he came to be the answer.

Pride is that which claims to be the author of what is really a gift.

Jesus is the author of faith the provider of faith and the object of faith.

As things are brought back under Christ's rule and authority they are restored to health beauty and freedom.

God sees us as we are loves us as we are and accepts us as we are. But by His grace He does not leave us as we are.

The very fact that we have access to God's attention and presence should concentrate the thoughts and elevate the heart.

The only person who dares wake up a king at 3:00 AM for a glass of water is a child. We have that kind of access

Nothing we formulate or do can qualify us for access to God. Only grace can do that- based not on our performance but on the saving work of Christ.

Jesus's teaching consistently attracted the irreligious while offending the Bible-believing religious people of his day.

There is a joy available that the deepest grief cannot put out. No circumstance or person can take away the joy God gives.

Paul sees all kinds of sins in himself and all kinds of accomplishments too but he refuses to connect them with his identity.

Everyone says they want community and friendship. But mention accountability or commitment to people and they run the other way.

In the church we have to deliberately let ourselves be transparent and accountable to others. We're a family.

Gifts are abilities God gives us to meet the needs of others in Christ's name.

The way to find your calling is to look at the way you were created. Your gifts have not emerged by accident.

Prayer is awe intimacy struggle-yet the way to reality.

Prayer is awe before an infinite force and yet it's intimacy with a personal friend.

Honor the image of God. Human beings are not accidents but creations.

Religious people find God useful. Gospel people find him beautiful.

In religion you obey because God is useful. In Christianity you obey because God is beautiful.

Jesus asks for far more than you ever thought but offers more than you ever dreamed.

God will only give you what you would have asked for if you knew everything he knows

Jesus may ask of you far more than you planned to give but He can give to you infinitely more than you dared ask or think.

Legalism is looking to something besides Jesus Christ in order to be acceptable and clean before God.

If Jesus rose from the dead then you have to accept all that he said.

How Religion Works: If I obey then God will love and accept me. The Gospel: I'm loved and accepted therefore I wish to obey.

Jesus says "I want you to follow me so fully so intensely so enduringly that all other attachments in your life look weak by comparison

The gospel humbles us into the dust and at the very same time exalts us to the heavens.

I am accepted by God through the work of Jesus Christ - therefore I obey

Religion says 'I obey; therefore I am accepted.' Christianity says 'I'm accepted therefore I obey.

You are more sinful than you could dare imagine and you are more loved and accepted than you could ever dare hope.

The Gospel is this: You're more sinful evil and weak than you'd ever believe. But you're more valued accepted and loved than you dared hope.

The gospel has two parts. It has the part that says you're a sinner and it has the part that says you're loved and accepted.

It is because of the doctrine of judgment and hell that Jesus' proclamations of grace and love are so astounding.

If you aren't constantly astonished at God's grace in your solitude there's no way it can happen in public.

In the original language 'Fear the Lord' doesn't mean be afraid. It means sustaining a joyful astonished awe and wonder before Him.

You cannot have Jesus' rescue without accepting His rule.

Trust is accepting what God sends into your life whether you understand it or not.

The great basis of Christian assurance is not how much our hearts are set on God but how unshakably his heart is set on us.

Christianity does not set faith against thinking. It sets faith against assuming.

Accepted in Christ we now run the race 'for the joy that is set before us' rather than 'for fear that comes behind us'.

The rich brother needs to let the gospel humble him while the poor brother needs to let the gospel affirm him.

Nothing is more important than to learn how to maintain a life of purpose in the midst of painful adversity.

Humility is so shy. If you begin talking about it it leaves.

If you say: I believed in God I trusted God and He didn't come through - You only trusted God to meet your agenda.

Bad evangelism says: I'm right you're wrong and I would love to tell you about it

Putting our faith in Christ is not about trying harder; it means transferring our trust away from ourselves and resting in him.

People only get in the afterlife what they have most wanted-either to have God as Savior and Master or to be their own Saviors and Masters.

The resurrection was God's way of stamping PAID IN FULL right across history so that nobody could miss it.

Love is primarily giving. It's an action that leads to a feeling not a feeling first.

Adam wasn't lonely because he was imperfect but because he was perfect. The ache for friends is not the result of sin.

How does Satan accuse us? By causing us to look at our sin rather than our Savior.

Sin has caused our affections to stray propelling us to worship relationships achievement and work-everything but God.

A lack of generosity refuses to acknowledge that your assets are not really yours but God's.

Believers should acknowledge and wrestle with doubts... It is no longer sufficient to hold beliefs just because you inherited them.

God's grace does not come to people who morally outperform others but to those who admit their failure to perform and who acknowledge their need for a Savior.

The gospel has supernatural versatility to address the particular hopes fears and idols of every culture and every person.

If you need something in addition to God to make you happy that is your true King.

Suffering is actually at the heart of the Christian story.

If you add anything to Jesus as a requirement for being happy that's your real king.

Jesus smashed two of the rich young ruler's assumptions: Christianity is something you can ADD and something you can DO.

Jesus' claims are particularly unnerving because if they are true there is no alternative but to bow the knee to him.

Your heart is smothering under your small ambitions.

The peace of God is not the absence of fear. It in fact is His presence.

Tolerance is not the absence of belief. Tolerance is how your beliefs teach you to treat other people

A sense of Jesus' absence might be a sign of his presence- a sign that he's working already in your life.

The more you see your own flaws and sins the more precious electrifying and amazing God's grace appears to you.

The sin that is most destructive in your life right now is the one you are most defensive about.

Christians should not be optimists; we know too much about sin. We should also not be pessimists for we know the living God.

No writer or thinker has taught me as much as James Hunter has about this all-important and complex subject of how culture is changed.

If this world was made by a triune God relationships of love are what life is really all about.

It is no more narrow to claim that one religion is right than to claim that one way to think about all religions is right.

If God is real why does he align perfectly with our views? We should expect God to challenge us on what we think is right somewhere

Covenant community is like air. We don't miss it until we need it.

Prayer-though it is often draining even an agony-is in the long term the greatest source of power that is possible.

The world says you are loved because of what you do. Jesus says you can now do all things because you are loved.

The essence of Christian obedience is not do's and don'ts but personal allegiance to Jesus.

If God does not have our highest allegiance we will use prayer to try to get things that have that designation.

How could a good all-powerful God allow suffering?

Occasionally God rips aside the veil and you begin to see this very fact: All things happen for you. All things. Everything is knit together.

Christ will do everything for you or nothing. He's either all of your righteousness or none.

If we give God things in hope that they'll earn us blessings we're really not doing anything for him. It's for ourselves.

Christianity does not provide the reason for each experience of pain but it does provide deep resources for actually facing suffering with hope and courage rather than bitterness and despair

We must go back again and again to the Gospel of Christ crucified so that our hearts are more deeply gripped by the reality of what He did and who we are in Him.

The Gospel does not promise you better life circumstances; it promises you a better life.

If you are a child of God you don't lose your status if you have a bad week.

The problem with the world is it blames problems on things besides sin and identifies salvation on things besides God.

The Bible says that our real problem is that every one of us is building our identity on something besides Jesus.

Proper wedding vows are more a promise of mutually binding future love than a declaration of your present love.

Real love the Bible says instinctively desires permanence.

It is possible to avoid Jesus as Savior as much by keeping all the Biblical rules as by breaking them.

It's important to remember the Gospel is a story; not a set of bullet points.

Marriage is two broken people having little broken people.

Legalistic remorse says "I broke God's rules " while real repentance says "I broke God's heart.

Not everyone is your brother or sister in the faith but everyone is your neighbor and you must love your neighbor.

Without immersion in God's words our prayers may not be merely limited and shallow but also untethered from reality.

Happiness is a by-product of wanting something more than happiness-to be rightly related to God and our neighbor.

Paul reminds us that in the Gospel we are both brought lower and raised higher than we can imagine.

It's impossible to have met the real Jesus and be indifferent. You either bow down in wonder OR go away offended.

Prayer is both conversation and encounter with God.

Men you'll never be a good groom to your wife unless you're first a good bride to Jesus.

Jesus does not just bring good news; he is the good news.

Disordered love always leads to misery and breakdown. The only way to 'reorder' our loves is to love God supremely.

While we want doubts to give way to faith we should be merciful and patient with those who are still in a doubt-troubled place.

The gospel shows a God far more holy than the legalist can bear yet far more merciful than a humanist can conceive

Friends become wiser together through a healthy clash of viewpoints.

The Gospel worldview equips the artist with a unique combination of optimism and realism about life.

We must have a strong inner life of fellowship and intimacy with Jesus if we are going to have a strong outer life of ministry

Religion: 'My identity is built on being a good person.' Gospel: 'My identity is not built on my record or my performance but on Christ's.'

Fear-based repentance makes us hate ourselves. Joy-based repentance makes us hate the sin.

Whatever you base your life on--you have to live up to that. Jesus is the one Lord you can live for who already died for you.

The basic purpose of prayer is not to bend God's will to mine but to mold my will into His.

The primary means-of-reviva l that everyone agrees upon is extraordinary prayer.

Careful obedience to God's law may serve as a strategy for rebelling against God

The cross is the place where we find the freedom to accept ourselves without being proud and to challenge ourselves without being crushed.

But to be fully known and truly loved is well a lot like being loved by God.

Unless you point to the good news of God's grace people will not be able to bear the bad news of God's judgement.

A life of gratitude to God for being saved is far more pleasing than a life based on self-righteousness over being good.

Like a baby learning language we learn how to communicate with God by listening to His words first.

Worry is not believing God will get it right and bitterness is believing God got it wrong.

Jesus Christ was treated as we deserved so that when we believe in Jesus God treats us as Jesus deserves.

Important reminder: It's not fair of you to demand more proof of Christians for their beliefs than you demand for your own.

Tolerance isn't about not having beliefs. It's about how your beliefs lead you to treat people who disagree with you.

How you experience your present is completely shaped by what you believe your ultimate future to be.

You can't live the Christian life without a band of Christian friends without a family of believers in which you find a place.

Only if you are part of a community of believers seeking to resemble serve and love Jesus will you ever get to know him and grow into his likeness.

No one is too bad for Jesus. A lot of people think they are too good for Jesus.

No one is so good that they don't need the grace of the gospel nor so bad that they can't receive the grace of the gospel.

God loves you just because He loves you.

As long as we think we are not that bad the idea of grace will never change us.

The deeper the experience of the free grace of God the more generous we must become.

To the degree you experience God's love towards you - seeing you as beautiful and radiant - to that degree sex won't ruin your life.

How do you change your behavior? Change what you worship

Life changing repentance begins where blame shifting ends.

When you say "Come in Jesus as my caregiver stay out as my Lord " he can't. He's both.

The Christian faith gives us a new conception of work as the means by which God loves and cares for his world through us.

Jesus came into this world not as a philosopher or a general but as a carpenter. All work matters to God.

Jesus' purpose is not to warm our hearts but to shatter our categories.

The best things that have been written almost are by Catholics during the counter Reformation: Ignatius of Loyola St. Francis de Sales John of the Cross St. Theresa of Ð?vila.....great stuff.

We are called not simply to communicate the gospel to nonbelievers; we must also intentionally celebrate the gospel before them.

If God is not at the center of your life something else is.

If there is a God you owe him far more than a morally decent life. He deserves to be at the center of your life.

The product of a true growing gospel-centered nature is often gentleness.

The weekly worship service can be very effective in evangelism of non-Christians and in edification of Christians if it does not aim at either alone but is gospel centered and in the vernacular.

It takes both spouses to say "My self-centeredness is the main problem in my marriage" to have a great marriage.

Reason can get you to probability but only commitment can get you to certainty.

If God exists then every good endeavor even the simplest ones pursued in response to God's calling can matter forever.

There seems to be a human instinct for prayer. Swiss theologian Karl Barth calls it our 'incurable God-sickness.'

Change won't happen through â??trying harder' but only through encountering the radical grace of God.

Grace is the free unmerited favor of God working powerfully on the mind and heart to change lives.

The key question in order to change you is not 'What would Jesus do?' but "What has Jesus done for you?

All change comes from deepening your understanding of the salvation of Christ and living out the changes that understanding creates in your heart.

You won't be able to change the world yourself anything if you don't change yourself inwardly deeply enduringly.

If you can't show the difference between religion and the Gospel people will confuse morality with a changed heart

God's salvation does not come in response to a changed life. A changed life comes in response to the salvation offered as a free gift.

The story of Jesus changes our lives because it is true.

All life-changing love is inconvenient.

While your character flaws may have created mild problems for other people they will create major problems for your spouse and your marriage.

I wouldn't venture to say which kind of sin is more prevalent. I wouldn't even want to try to characterize certain 'circles.'

To be a Christian is a standing a legal position. It means to be a child of God. You are or you are not there is no try.

The gospel is not about choosing to follow advice; it's about being called to follow a King.

The sin under all other sins is a lack of joy in Christ.

The world is a dark place and yet the coming of Jesus Christ shows us no one and nothing is hopeless.

Christ did not suffer so you wouldn't suffer. He suffered so when you suffer you will become like Him.

Christ's resurrection not only gives you hope for the future; it gives you hope to handle your scars right now.

Do you realize that it is only in the gospel of Jesus Christ that you get the verdict before the performance?

Jesus Christ as only an example will crush you. You'll never be able to live up to it. But Jesus Christ as the Lamb will save you.

Grace is humbling and restorative. It pulls you down because Christ had to die for you but also lifts you up because he wanted to die for you.

If we can't "love the sinner; hate the sin" then how can we relate to ourselves? Love who we are in Christ but still hate the sin remaining.

If you're a Christian how do you deal with stress without Jesus? You don't.

The gospel is not just the "ABCs" but the "A-to-Z" of the Christian life.

A Christian is one who stops working to be saved not one who stops working!

Christians necessarily believe we depend on God for everything-a prayerless Christian then is a contradiction in terms.

Our Christian hope is that we are going to live with Christ in a new earth where there is not only no more death but where life is what it was always meant to be.

The main problem in the Christian life is that we have not thought out the deep implications of the gospel we have not 'used' the gospel in and on all parts of our life.

Christianity is not just for the strong; it's for everyone.

If Christianity is really true it will be offending and correcting you somewhere.

The resurrection makes Christianity the most irritating religion on the face of the earth.

Any person who only sticks with Christianity as long as things are going his or her way is a stranger to the cross

Christians need the gospel as much as non-Christians do.

To truly become Christians we must also repent of the reasons we ever did anything right.

All Christians have opportunities to serve those who might never come to church or listen to a sermon.

Easter means that Christmas worked.

The world can't save itself. That's the message of Christmas.

Christmas means Jesus came down and got involved in suffering. He hears your cries.

Jesus experienced homelessness at Christmas so that we could experience a love we could never lose.

Christmas is telling you that you could never get to heaven on your own. God had to come to you.

Christmas is an invitation by God to say: Look what I've done to come near to you. Now draw near to me...I want to be a friend.

If the church does not identify with the marginalized it will itself be marginalized. This is God's poetic justice.

The church does not simply have a missions department; it should wholly exist to be a mission.

It takes more than a great church to reach a city it takes a great movement of churches.

I am going to judge my circumstances by Jesus' love not Jesus' love by my circumstances.

True citizens of the heavenly city are the best residents of the earthly city.

How could you possibly know that no religion can see the whole truth unless you yourself have the superior comprehensive knowledge of spiritual reality you just claimed non of the religions have?

Jesus cannot be just liked. His claims make us either kill him or crown him.

Two things we want so desperately glory and relationship can coexist only in God.

A person's faith can collapse almost overnight if she failed over the years to listen patiently to her own doubts which should only be discarded after long reflection.

Marriage is so much like salvation and our relationship with Christ that you can't understand marriage w/o looking at the gospel.

Discipleship is not an option. Jesus says that if anyone would come after me he must follow me.

Most people want Jesus as a consultant rather than a King and He does not come that way.

When pain and suffering come upon us we finally see not only that we are not in control of our lives but that we never were.

I am God and I am coming to find you.

Every religion has a prophet who is pointing people to God. Jesus is the only one who says 'I am God and I am coming to find you.'

You don't fall in love. You commit to it.

You dont fall into love. You commit to it. Love is saying I will be there no matter what.

What keeps the marriage going is your commitment to your spouse's holiness.

God is so committed to your ultimate joy that he was willing to plunge into the greatest depths of suffering himself for you.

A common vision can unite people of very different temperaments.

The future is already won and the more hostile the culture the easier it is to communicate the difference of Christianity.

Suffering dispels the illusion that we have the strength and competence to rule our own lives and save ourselves.

Truth is more important freedom is more complex and Jesus is more liberating than you think.

Contextualization is not giving people what they want. It is giving God's answers (which they probably do not want) to the questions they are asking and in forms they can comprehend.

Jesus is not asking us to do anything for him that he hasn't already done for us under conditions of difficulty beyond our comprehension.

When people say "God is love " I think they mean that love is extremely important or that God really wants us to love. But in Christian conception God really has love as his essence.

Doing justice includes not only the righting of wrongs but generosity and social concern especially toward the poor and vulnerable.

Those who condemn the self-righteous for the sake of self-discovery do so with ironic self-righteousness.

Prayer is the way to experience a powerful confidence that God is handling our lives well.

Marriage does not so much bring you into confrontation with your spouse as confront you with yourself.

We must neither confuse evangelism with doing justice nor separate them from one another.

Our culture says that feelings of love are the basis for actions of love. And of course that can be true. But it is truer to say that actions of love can lead consistently to feelings of love.

The Gospel is the deepest consolation you can offer to the human heart.

Freedom is not the absence of limitations and constraints but it is finding the right ones those that fit our nature and liberate us.

If we are not deliberately thinking about our culture and our context we will be conformed to it without ever knowing.

The key to continual and deeper spiritual renewal and revival is the continual re-discovery of the gospel.

Prayer is continuing a conversation that God has started through his Word and his grace which eventually becomes a full encounter with him.

The most liberating act of free unconditional grace demands that the recipient give up control of his or her life.

If you have to run away from something that used to be an idol you're actually still enslaved by it. It's still controlling you.

Our character is mainly shaped by our primary social community - the people with whom we eat play converse and study.

A triune God would call us to converse with him . . . because he wants to share the joy he has. Prayer is our way of entering into the happiness of God himself.

God's grace and forgiveness while free to the recipient are always costly for the giver..

When we grasp that we are unworthy sinners saved by an infinitely costly grace it destroys both our self-righteousn ess and our need to ridicule others.

Love is counting someone else's needs and interests as more important than your own needs or interests or comfort.

There is no evil that the father's love cannot pardon and cover there is no sin that is a match for his grace.

Truth without love is imperious self-righteousn ess. Love without truth is cowardly self-indulgence .

Pride is the carbon-monoxide of Sin. It silently and slowly kills you without you even knowing.

Religion says earn your life. Secular society says create your life. Jesus says 'My life for your life.

Work is taking the raw material of creation and developing it for the sake of others.

After creation God said 'It is finished'-and he rested. After redemption Jesus said 'It is finished'-and we can rest.

The purpose of Jesus's coming is to put the whole world right to renew and restore the creation not to escape it.

Because of the Cross God can be both just towards sin and yet mercifully justifying to sinners.

The cross is the place where the Judge takes the Judgment.

Out of the cross comes the resurrection. Out of weakness comes real strength.

Only on the cross do you have a totally holy God and a totally loving God.

The happy ending of the Resurrection is so enormous that it swallows up even the sorrow of the Cross.

Jesus was much more interested in the quality of the people's response to him than in the quantity of the crowd.

Ministry to the poor is a crucial sign that we believe the gospel.

If you love anything in this world more than God you will crush that object under the weight of your expectations.

Pastors must practice a two-fold program of cultural engagement: deconstruction and demystification of cultural idols and reconstruction and re-enchantment of a gospel-shaped worldview.

Generosity is not only about money. There is more than one currency. Let your generosity be pervasive in life.

Like a surgeon friends cut you in order to heal you.

If you wait until your motives are pure and unselfish before you do something you will wait forever.

To say doctrine doesn't matter only how you live matters is itself a doctrine. It's the doctrine of salvation by works.

Those who understand the gospel cannot possibly look down on anyone since they were saved by sheer grace not by their perfect doctrine or strong moral character.

Ironically the insistence that doctrines do not matter is really a doctrine itself

We have to be careful not to elevate our preferences to moral standards and judge others by them. We only do so to feel superior.

Hell is having to execute a pointless act from which nothing ever comes except the need to do it again.

God has become human. The absolute has become particular. The ideal has become real. The divine has taken up a human nature.

All I know is if I don't care about the poor if my church doesn't care about the poor that's evil.

To discover the real you look at what you spend time thinking about when no one is looking.

If your god never disagrees with you you might just be worshipping an idealized version of yourself.

Even if our own troubles are great we should still serve. Jesus washed His disciples feet on the way to the cross.

If we pick out which parts of the Bible we dislike we actually have a god we've created. How can that god ever call you out on anything?

The lack of joy in your life is due to your lack of mission.

We are so evil and sinful and flawed that Jesus had to die for us... But we are so lobed and valued that he was willing to due for us.

Unless you believe the gospel everything you do will be driven by either pride or fear.

As many have learned and later taught you don't realize Jesus is all you need until Jesus is all you have.

The common moral framework: Do anything as long as it does no harm to others. Problem: Whose definition of harm?

We are so quick to tweet Facebook and Instagram but we treat prayer with a sense of delay?

What greater value could you possibly have than to be delighted in and sacrificed for by the Maker of the universe.

Describe the God you've rejected. Describe the God you don't believe in. Maybe I don't believe in that God either.

When I forget the gospel I become dependent on the smiles and evaluation of others.

To pray is to accept that we are and always will be wholly dependent on God for everything.

If there is a God you owe him far more than a morally decent life.

Jesus took the tree of death so you could have the tree of life.

Prayer should be done regularly persistently resolutely and tenaciously at least daily whether we feel like it or not.

The Gospel is that Jesus Christ came to earth lived the life we should have lived and died the death we should have died.

When you experience God it is deeply personal but it's not at all private.

God loves and defends those with the least economic and social power and so should we.

If the preaching of our ministers and the practice of our parishioners do not have the same effect on people that Jesus had then we must not be declaring the same message that Jesus did.

Sin is the despairing refusal to find your deepest identity in your relationship and service to God.

We are saved by a man who died loving his enemies.

What you treasure will ultimately require you die for it Jesus is the only treasure that died for you.

Success and suffering will either darken your heart or make you wise but they won't leave you where you were.

There is a direct relationship between a person's grasp and experience of God's grace and his or her heart for justice and the poor.

Because of Jesus-there is always hope even in the darkest moments of your life.

Faith is not primarily a function of how you feel. Faith is living out and believing what truth is despite what you feel.

The gospel destroys pride because it tells us we are so lost that Jesus had to die for us.

We were designed to know serve and love God supremely - and when we are faithful to that design we flourish.

What the heart most wants the mind finds reasonable the will finds doable and the emotions find desirable.

Holiness gives us new desires and brings old desires into line with one another.

Holding a grudge against someone means you think you know what they deserve and you take it upon yourself to give it to them.

The determining factor in our relationship with God is not our past but Christ's past.

If God wiped out all sources of evil in the world we would no longer be here the evil is inside us.

The world values power comfort success and recognition. Jesus frees us to value grief sacrifice weakness and exclusion.

The gospel is an exclusive truth but it's the most inclusive exclusive truth in the world.

When the world sees us doing evangelism they just see us recruiting. When they see us doing justice they see God's glory.

Jesus is the only Lord who if you receive him will fulfill you completely and if you fail him will forgive you eternally.

Faith journeys are never simply intellectual exercises.

Faith in God's promises means not always following the expected rational path.

A Christian is somebody whose eyes have been opened who admits that Jesus is not what you expected but he's what you need.

Prayer turns theology into experience.

Christians don't believe that goodness gets you to heaven. Christians believe it's exhausting to rely on your own goodness to please God.

If you didn't earn your salvation how are you going to un-earn it?

Every single emotion you have should be processed in prayer.

While other worldviews lead us to sit in the midst of life's joys foreseeing the coming sorrows Christianity empowers its people to sit in the midst of this world's sorrows tasting the coming joy.

Big cities have a lot of 'younger brothers' who have left traditional parts of the world and their families for a more liberal lifestyle. But cities are filled to the gills with 'elder brothers' too.

Love is the effort and desire to make someone else everything they were created to be.

Our moral efforts are too feeble and falsely motivated to ever merit salvation.

The gospel is not only the way to enter the kingdom; it is the way to live in the kingdom.

Prayer is our way of entering into the happiness of God himself

We must not settle for an informed mind without an engaged heart.

Every treasure on this earth says 'Give your life to purchase me.' Jesus says 'I'm the one treasure who died to purchase you.'

If we have not seen our sin and sought radical forgiveness from God we will be unable to forgive and to seek the good of those who have wronged us.

The more you rejoice in your own forgiveness the quicker you will be to forgive others.

It is impossible to forgive someone if you feel superior to him or her.

When we try and use fear or pride to stop from sinning we are forgetting that we sin because of either fear or pride.

We deserve to be forgotten because we forget Him. But because Jesus died on the cross we will never ever be forgotten by God.

The life of faith is not the perfect life; it is the life which clings on to what God has said he will do.

On the cross Jesus was treated as an outcast so that we could be brought into God's family freely by grace.

The gospel frees us from the relentless pressure of having to prove ourselves for we are already proven and secure.

It is not the strength of your faith but the object of your faith that actually saves you.

Public faith means going public with what's in your heart with humility and respect for others as we speak of the truth of the gospel.

The church should be a place where people can be free to say that they are sinners.

Fear logic and tradition are not going to make you live a good life when no one is looking.

To fear the Lord is to be overwhelmed with wonder before the greatness of God and his love.

The simple fact is that only if I love Jesus more than my wife will I be able to serve her needs ahead of my own.

By praying with friends you will be able to hear and see facets of Jesus that you have not yet perceived.

You are a totally loved moral failure.

To fail to pray then is not to merely break some religious rule- it is a failure to treat God as God.

Suffering is the stripping of our hope in finite things therefore we do not put our ultimate hope in anything finite.

The Christian gospel is that I am so flawed that Jesus had to die for me yet I am so loved and valued that Jesus was glad to die for me.

For every one look at your sins take five looks at your Savior.

Your feelings come from where you find your hope. Where is your happiness and your significance?

One of the signs that you may not grasp the unique radical nature of the gospel is that you are certain that you do.

We are regularly in danger of having too light a view of our sin and also too light a grasp of what Jesus has done to free us from our sin.

Idols are often good things that we have made into ultimate things.

Idolatry happens when we take good things and make them ultimate things

Grace is to be let into a place that you don't have a right to be.

Let us preach grace till humility just starts to grow in us.

Without the gospel we hate ourselves instead of our sin.

We can only grasp the gospel's sweetness if we first grapple with its offense- you can't save yourself.

We only fully grasp the gospel when we understand as Paul did that we are the worst sinner we know

Nobody who understands the free grace of God takes sin lightly.

The reason the stone was rolled away on Jesus's tomb was not so that Jesus could get out but so that we could get in.

Jesus warns people far more often about greed than about sex yet almost no one thinks they are guilty of it.

I am so bad that He had to die. I am so loved that He was glad to die.

It's a mistake to think that you must feel love to give it.

If his suffering did not make Jesus give up on us nothing will.

If our identity is in our work rather than Christ success will go to our heads and failure will go to our hearts.

So live in the light of the resurrection and renewal of this world and of yourself in a glorious never-ending joyful dance of grace.

When we worry we are saying 'I know the way my life is supposed to go and God's not getting it right'.

The world is polarizing over religion. It is getting both more religious and less religious at the same time.

God so loved us and hates suffering that he was willing to come down and get involved in it.

Suffering can refine us rather than destroy us because God himself walks with us in the fire.

The Gospel is good news not good advice. Advice = what we should do. News = report of what was done for us.

Prayer is a recognition of the greatness of our God.

If God is treated as God during suffering then suffering can reveal and present him in all his greatness.

Because we put ourselves in God's place He put Himself in our place.

The God of the Bible takes our misery and suffering so seriously that he was willing to take it on himself

Job never saw why he suffered but he saw God and that was enough.

We tend to see God as a means through which we get things to make us happy. For most of us He has not become our happiness.

If you don't love the poor you don't know what God's done for you.

All human problems are ultimately symptoms and our separation from God is the cause.

Just because you can't see or imagine a good reason why God might allow something to happen doesn't mean there can't be one.

To love our success more than God and our neighbor hardens the heart making us less able to feel and to sense.

Suffering is unbearable if you aren't certain that God is for you and with you.

Only if God can say things that make you struggle will you know that you have met a real God and not a figment of your imagination.

There is no sin that is a match for God's grace.

If you don't feel like praying pray to God to give you the desire.

The prerequisite for receiving the grace of God is to know you need it.

If you have a small view of your sin God's grace will be small to you.

God's reckless grace is our greatest hope.

If you want God's grace all you need is need all you need is nothing.

The church is not a museum for pristine saints but a hospital ward for broken sinners.

Only in Jesus Christ do we see how the untamable infinite God can become a baby and a loving Savior. On the cross we see how both the love and the holiness of God can be fulfilled at once.

The main human problems often are that we misidentify what will make us happy; and we ask people and things to save us beyond their ability.

The issue on which everything hangs is not whether you like His teaching but if He â?ªrose from the dead.

The human race doesn't need more books telling them what to do. They need the power to do what they already know.

Repentance is like antiseptic. You pour antiseptic onto a wound and at first it stings. Then it heals.

To let the gospel of Jesus shape how we work means to heed the influence of both the psychological idols within our hearts as well as the sociological idols in our culture and profession.

To take a person out of slavery takes an instant. To take slavery out of a person takes a process.

If you come from insignificance and when you die you return to insignificance then nothing is significant now.

The infallible test of spiritual integrity Jesus says is your private prayer life.

The best people often have terrible lives. Job is one example and Jesus?the ultimate â??Job ' the only truly fully innocent sufferer ? is another.

Jesus is the ultimate Job the only truly innocent sufferer.

In the secular view suffering is never seen as a meaningful part of life but only as an interruption.

We should let Scripture interpret us more than we interpret Scripture.

God invites us to come as we are not stay as we are.

What is an idol? It is anything more important to you than God anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God anything you seek to give you what only God can give.

Money isn't an idol. It just shows you where your idols are.

We're far worse than we ever imagined and far more loved than we could ever dream.

If I have the smile of God all other frowns are inconsequential.

What you do in secret tells you who your God is.

You are under-qualified for the job of God.

Jesus's miracles are not just a challenge to our minds but a promise to our hearts that the world we all want is coming.

Jesus was the temple to end all temples the priest to end all priests & the sacrifice to end all sacrifices.

We modern people think of miracles as the suspension of the natural order but Jesus meant them to be the restoration of the natural order.

Are you living to justify yourself or are you living because you are justified?

Think like a prophet serve like a priest and plan like a king.

In a smaller church your pastoring sets up your preaching. In a larger church your preaching sets up your pastoring.

If you seek to serve people more than to gain power you will not only serve people you will gain influence.

...the essence of gospel-humility is not thinking more of myself or thinking less of myself it is thinking of myself less.

We don't merely need the money from work to survive. We need the work itself to survive and live fully human lives more than money.

People are messy; therefore relationships will be messy. Don't be surprised by messiness.

The goal of prayer is not just the sharing of our ideas but also of ourselves.

You should not begin to pray for all you want until you realize that in God you have all you need.

Prayer can be simple but it's not easy. Nothing great is.

Don't obey God to get things obey God to get God.

Revival occurs when those who think they already know the gospel discover they do not really or fully know it.

The observer of beauty always receives a passion to share the beauty with others.

Religion operates on the principle 'I obey-therefore I am accepted by God.' But the operating principle of the gospel is 'I am accepted by God through what Christ has done-therefore I obey.'

When Job was prospering he prayed. When he was suffering he still prayed.

Many times people think if God has called you to something he's promising you success. He might be calling you to fail to prepare you for something else through the failure.

The irreligious don't repent at all and the religious only repent of sins. But Christians repent of their wrongfully placed righteousness.

The more you understand how your salvation isn't about your behavior the more radically your behavior will change.

We need to remember that we are saved by grace when we fail. But we need to remember it much more when we succeed.

Rejoicing and repentance must go together. Repentance without rejoicing will lead to despair. Rejoicing without repentance is shallow and will only provide passing inspiration instead of deep change.

Living is giving....If you spend your money on yourself you are just surviving. But if you want your life to count if you want to really live - give.

There are some needs only you can see. There are some hands only you can hold. There are some people only you can reach.

What you do today is shaped by what you believe about tomorrow.

Where you find your significance is where you find your salvation.

The church is often like a football stadium where 22 people need a rest and thousands of people need exercise.

Because sin is not just breaking the rules it is putting yourself in the place of God as Savior Lord and Judge just as each son sought to displace the authority of the father in his own life.

Look at Jesus Christ. Every time he was in trouble he used the Word of God. When he was tempted he used the Word. When he was suffering on the cross he used the Word.

Everyone worships something. The only choice you get is what to worship.

Religion makes us proud of what we have done. The Gospel makes us proud of what Jesus has done.

The Gospel is news of what God has done to reach us. It is not advice about what we must do to reach God.
